‘Pepe the Frog Starry Night’ is one of the earliest oil-painted Pepe the Frog artworks, setting the standard for meme characters as fine art. Olga Vishnevskaya (also known as ‘Pepelangelo’) began painting Pepe artworks after seeing the cartoon frog’s emergence as a memetic symbol in popular culture and politics. Since then, she has exhibited Pepe artworks in art centres all over the world, from London to Paris to Miami. Her work has achieved great recognition in the Bitcoin community, and she is a notable example of an artist that has benefitted from selling art for Bitcoin.
This painting captures Pepe the Frog in the ‘starry night’ scene frequently painted by Van Gogh throughout his life. It is perhaps one of the best examples of Pepe as fine art rather than a low-effort or digital meme. Much like the original painter, Vishnevskaya has used colours and shapes to illuminate the night sky, simultaneously creating a visual effect to present the sky as moving.
The 2017 work is a one-off piece for collectors interested in fine art frogs. Nartamoto’s debut exhibition saw the sale of another 2017 Vishneskaya painting for 0.5 BTC last October (today’s fiat value: $33,394). This is another work with similar provenance, verified as original and ‘first’ by the artist. ‘Pepe the Frog Starry Night’ is much larger, and it would be a remarkable feature in a home or gallery.
