“SAT” Series 1, Bitcoin Opsec Maze Art This project is primarily inspired by the Sanskrit character “sat” सत् – which has deep and complex meanings connoting “absolute truth,” “reality,” an “the essence which is unchangeable.” By beautiful coincidence – if one believes in coincidences – the “sat” or “satoshi” (paying homage to bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto) is the name given to the smallest unit of a bitcoin (100M sats = 1 bitcoin). In the maze, the character सत्, with all its meanings, lies at the center, creating a gaol to be reached. While the maze itself – which is drawn completely freehand, such as to force the incorporation any “mistakes” made by the artist into the finished art – stands as a representation of proof of work, both in its making and its solving, and embodies the haphazard and imperfect journey to the center in pursuit of truth – be it in bitcoin, or anything else in life. Artistically, the SAT series draws from the history of hard money, particularly coinage, which like the “sat” are the smallest of units of value/meaning in physical money, suggestions of which can be see and felt in the work’s circular pattern shapes and the artist’s use to coinage tones – gold, silver, and copper/bronze. Other notable areas of more subtle inspiration include Dharmic and Islamic pattern art, alchemical symbology, and sacred geometry. “SAT,” as art, is deliberately “imperfect,” unmeasured, and wholly improvised. Each maze is envisioned as its own experience in contemplation and magic – in the words of the artist himself, “I do not know where I am going when begin to create the maze – I simply follow where the maze leads and through me, as the hand, the maze reveals what it wills.”
